Kari Holbrook McKnight and Jen Crossley Workshops!


Friday, May 3, through Sunday May 5, 2013

Three fully packed days of instruction, eight inspiring workshops, two crazy artists, Kari Holbrook McKnight and Jen Crossley!  Workshops will be held at the wonderful SmittenDust Studio located in quaint Dimondale, near Lansing, Michigan.

Our goal is to offer an exciting, international-caliber art event, yet keep costs down to local level pricing.  There are no kit fees and day classes include lunch!
There will be eight choices of exciting classes full of demonstrations and instruction. We'll allow plenty of time to complete unique projects, plus have time for process-driven explorations and discussions.  There will be limited enrollment to allow for classroom comfort and lots of one-on-one time with the instructors.

If you sign up for 3 or more classes, you'll receive a $15 discount!

 Accommodations: We have a block of hotel rooms at the nearby Comfort Inn, 9742 Woodlane Drive, Dimondale, MI and includes 2 double beds, full breakfast, jacuzzi for $105 + tax. Limited Enrollment.
  A $50 non-refundable deposit holds your spot.  We are expecting full enrollment for these workshops, and are taking students on a first-come, first-served basis.  Classes will be guaranteed once deposit is received. Please do not send payment to SmittenDust Studio!

CLASSES


Bird House Pendant
with Jen Crossley
Friday May 3, 2013 from 9 am– 4 pm
COST:  $105, lunch included. 

Learn how to make this unique mini-etched bird house.   In this class you will learn how to metal etch in a very simple way.  We will construct a mini bird house pendant.
Supply List:
Fire brick essential for soldering (Delphi Glass in Lansing)
Non-lead solder (from Home Depot) Bernzomatic brand metal working orange packet
Small paint brush for flux, butane torch from Home Depot or Harbor Freight and a refill of butane gas, tin snips (non-serrated (www.amarkintime.com), cutting mat, scissors, ruler, Sharpie fine and think liner, rubber mallet or a stain glass hammer (only if you have one!) file with lines running the same way not-crossed, (Home Depot or Lowes), scrap of wood to drill into, bench block, Stazon black inkpad, rubber stamps for design (Jen will bring some stamps to share) jewelry pliers, both round nose and flat nose, masking tape (wide) apron, cordless drill and 1/8th drill bit, a doming block, but only if you have one!



What Lies Beneath

AS SEEN ON SKETCHBOOK CHALLENGE!!!


We’ve heard “you can’t judge a book by its cover” and here’s proof!  The white hardbound cover conceals a fantastic world inside!  Pages explode with vitality and color. 
 
As we relish the printing, stenciling and painting of these fantastic pages, we will explore Shade, Tint and Hue, the keys to any beautiful, vibrant, and cohesive color story.  We will investigate color transitions, and how to make them with purpose and success.  Every artist will leave with a brilliantly paged hardbound journal, full of colorfully created background pages, just begging for an adventure to be recorded. 

Kari will bring her own line of polymer stamps!
Supply List:
Apron, water container, a brayer to use in paint, a few colors of acrylic paint, baby wipes, matte medium (liquidy), scissors Optional: stamps, stencils







 

Tin Dreams

Come and make this fun little tin pendant!  We will construct the pendant using aging techniques, learn riveting, and then turn everything into a wonderful pendant.  Safely learn the aging processes, rusting and patinas.

Supply List:

Cutting Mat, Scissors, Permanent marker, Ruler
Ball peen hammer or if you have one a rivet hammer
Round nose pliers, Flat nose pliers, wire cutter (flush cutters)
Cordless drill or a hand drill 1mm and 1/16th drill bit
Sandpaper
Student may bring bits n pieces to put on the pendant if you like
Piece of wood to drill into
Bench block



 


Delectable Doodles & Fantastic Fonts

Does your handwriting keeps you from art journaling? No more worries! No drawing or calligraphy skills required! 

AS SEEN ON SKETCHBOOK CHALLENGE!!! 

This stress-free class is the perfect intro to creating your own unique and beautiful fonts and writing style to incorporate into your art pieces!  You will learn how to make your own tools to ease this process. 

Kari’s step by step demos and visual aids make it all so simple, and enjoyable! 

Kari will also be bringing her own line of polymer stamps for all to use and enjoy in this workshop.
 
Supplies you will need to bring:
(4-5) pages of paper or a journal (at least 6x9),
A twin tip Sharpie marker OR
Faber Castell PITT artist Pens,
pencil and good eraser, scissors
Optional:  colored pencils, black  Staz On inkpad







Etched In Time

Have you always wanted to learn metal etching? Here is your chance!
Its fun and very addictive.  Learn how to make metal etched covers for your book, then how to sew it together.  Add your own unique treasure to finish this fun project.


Supply List:
Tin snips non serrated, Cutting Mat, Scissors, Ruler, Sharpie fine liner, small rubber mallet, Awl, File non chequer, Scrap of wood to drill into, Bench block, Stazon black Inkpad, Rubber stamps for design-(Teacher will bring some stamps to share)Papers for your book eg water press paper 8 1/2" x 11" size x 14 sheets, Jewelry pliers, round nose, Flat nose pliers, Apron, Assorted mixed media goodies to put on your book spine eg: buttons, coins, watch faces see photo. Tempted By Tape

Don’t you just LOVE all the wonderful new Artist tapes out there? Do you have a tape problem?   Washi tapes, packing tapes, duct tapes, flue tapes… Spend the day in fabulously fun mixed media play creating a journal just to show off your favorite tapes!



EVERYONE will go home with a completely bound journal that is richly patterned, lavishly colored and showcasing artist tapes!  We will explore making our own patterned tapes, altering tapes and which tapes to use when!


Supply list:
2-3 colors you like of inexpensive acrylic craft paint
Gel Medium
A couple small rolls of your favorite patterned or blank tape
A water container, paper towels, an apron
A brayer or roller to use in paint
A pencil and scissors

Little Bag

Moodlings

Explore texture mediums and crackle paints with gusto!  3D polymer clay embellishments add a lighthearted touch of whimsy to sarcastic or sweet sentiments- you decide which moodling you want to unleash.  We will delve into glazes and glitters, mark making and mica chips.



Can’t stop with just one, so we’ll make a couple of these little treasures! 







Kari will bring her large collection of molds and stamps, so you’ll have a large selection of mini frozen Charlottes, faces, gears and sprockets, flowers and other goodies to customize your piece to your liking!
